In Indian scriptures there is a description of a Goddess called Shri Laxmi. She is the wife of Shri Vishnu, and hence, the power behind all evolutionary work that takes place in this universe. There are many things that we can learn from this master manager of evolution but one thing that is most helpful for us in the context of this topic is that Shri Laxmi stands on a lotus. There is a very deep significance behind why She stands on a lotus but for now let’s focus our attention on the qualities of the lotus flower itself.
The lotus is regarded as a very holy flower in India because it is so receptive to everything that is crude and funny. Even though it is born in the mud, it gives a beautiful fragrance to the whole atmosphere and covers the pond with its big green leaves so that the pond looks very beautiful.
Then the lotus is pink in color, and we know that the color pink represents love. When an insect like a beetle comes to a lotus, the lotus accepts the beetle and offers its soft corona for the beetle to rest. Even though the beetle has so many thorns on its body, the lotus allows the beetle to sit on top of its corona with all love. During the night the lotus closes its petals so that the poor insect does not get any trouble from the outside weather and can rest nicely. It also gives a very soothing beautiful fragrance to the beetle till the morning. It is rather poetic how the beetle enjoys the comfort of the corona and the lotus enjoys the enjoyment of the beetle. The lotus does not get disturbed or upset by the beetle’s presence. In fact, it does everything it can to provide a comfortable environment for the beetle. After the beetle has rested well, it collects honey from the lotus and flies away; and the lotus continues to grow — it does not get diminished or die out.
Now consider a world where all human beings have a temperament and wisdom like the lotus — warm, loving, accepting, caring, and respectful towards all other human beings. Isn’t that world worth striving for? :-)
But establishment of such a world requires evolution of human consciousness to a new dimension of awareness (called “Turiya” in Sanskrit) and this change can be obtained only by awakening the Kundalini energy that every human being is born with.
Kundalini is a primordial energy which is coiled up and remains in a potential state in the triangular bone called “Sacrum” at the base of the spine. When the Kundalini is awakened, it connects human awareness to the all-pervading power of divine love. This is how a human being achieves the state of Self-Realization or Yoga (union with the Divine). As a by-product of this happening, all of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual problems are solved.
Incarnations, saints, mystics, prophets, and seers throughout history have all talked about the Kundalini and the Tree of Life (path of the sacred Kundalini) that brings about our spiritual rebirth — and the innumerable benefits of Self-Realization.
“There is a strange tree, which stands without roots and bears fruits without blossoming; It has no branches and no leaves, it is a lotus allover” — Saint Kabir
Self-Realization is a blessing of the divine and there is no need for starving, fasting, chanting, standing on your head, or any other extreme physical measures (including modern yoga’s that are prevalent today) to awaken the Kundalini. Also, since the all-pervading power of divine love is doing all the living work, one cannot pay for the awakening of the Kundalini.
Here’s hoping that the power of pure love will enlighten every human’s heart and make us all peaceful, kind, and loving towards each other.
